Synopsis

Title: The Watcher

Synopsis:

In this atmospheric silent thriller, Tom, a teen man, experiences an increasingly unsettling encounter with a mysterious figure that seems to be stalking him. The film opens with Tom relaxing in his dimly lit living room, watching TV late at night. When he notices a shadowy figure standing outside his window, he brushes it off as a figment of his imagination. However, as he tries to move on, the figure begins appearing inside his home—first in the doorway, then inside the room, always watching and never moving.

As Tom attempts to leave and call for help, he realizes the figure is always one step ahead, anticipating his every move. In a state of panic, he fumbles with doors and phones, but the figure only grows closer, its presence suffocating. When a chilling message appears on Tom's phone—“I’m right behind you”—the tension reaches a peak. Trapped and terrified, Tom spins around to face the figure, which now looms directly behind him, its shadow swallowing him whole.

With no escape and no sound, Tom’s body freezes in sheer terror, and the camera pulls back to reveal the figure's all-consuming presence. The film ends in total darkness, with the ticking of a clock as the only sound, leaving the fate of Tom—and the true nature of the watcher—ambiguous.

mood board

the feel of a short film I am going for is for a scary and eerie feeling. the lighting will be dim and only use minimal light. I will do this to create a sense of suspense and increase the eerie atmosphere. costumes are going to be casual because the man is at home he will look comfortable. so here is the mood board that I created:

inspo

I have a couple of inspirations from different films.

  1. It Follows (2014)-This supernatural thriller creates a pervasive sense of dread as a young woman is pursued by an entity that is always one step behind her. The slow-building tension and minimalist storytelling make it a good reference for a sense of being stalked by an invisible presence. this is the piece I want to pick from this film the storyline.
  2. A Quiet Place (2018)- While not silent, the film focuses on silence and the horror that comes with it. The emphasis on sound (or lack thereof) and the suspenseful pacing are great examples of tension building without dialogue. i want to try and do this because it will build suspense in my film.
  3. The Invitation (2015)- in this film, I will be picking the atmospheric feel. The film builds an atmosphere of discomfort and unease that would translate well to your concept.
  4. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xBoKesAQFHU- This is a true crime story that I will be picking some of the storylines for because it is about a family being watched by a random figure.

idea change

i had an idea change when working on my script because as I was working on it I found that my idea has been done many times and I thought that I could make a better film with a different idea. so my new idea is a atmospheric silent thriller about a man notices a figure standing across the street, staring at him through his window. As he tries to ignore it, the figure's presence becomes more menacing, and the man realizes that the figure is somehow always one step ahead of him, anticipating his every move.

Audience research

I sent out a survey to find out what my audience would like. I got 20 responses from multiple different types of people. Here are the responses:

These are the statistics I got from the survey, and to summarize it my audience wants a psychological horror that has isolation, minimal dialogue and psychological tension. The platform that they would want to see the information coming out about the film should be on Instagram. they want to to post BTS, teasers and sound clips. i am going to take all of these suggestions before I start writing the script so I make something my audience would want and enjoy watching.

Inspo

The Netflix series A Series of Unfortunate Events and Home alone served as the main source of inspiration for my short video. The main protagonists are followed through a sequence of unanticipated and frequently unfortunate occurrences throughout the show. Because it embodies the mood and ambiance I wish to convey in my video, I selected this series as my inspiration.

Charlie Chaplin's work is another important influence. His movies frequently feature humorous scenes that resemble a string of unfortunate incidents. Chaplin's use of brief, comical situations produces an original comedic effect, therefore this is the approach I try to imitate. I intend to use sound effects in my own effort, as they are a major component of many of his silent films. I also plan to be inspired by the early cinematic aesthetic found in Chaplin's films. To further reflect the charm and nostalgic appeal of vintage silent comedy movies, for example, I want to use a laugh track to increase its comedic impact.

Final idea

My final idea was the Bad Luck Brian’s a person wakes up to a string of unlucky incidents, such as their car not starting, their toast burning, and coffee spilling. Their bad luck keeps getting worse until it appears like the universe is working against them. The twist? It is Friday, the 13th, when they wake.

BYE BYEEEEE

This marks the end of my coursework. It was a fun but hard task to do, but I still enjoyed the whole process. I learned a lot from this when...
